A New Song! Una Nueva Canción!

It's still in the rough stages, but I'd still like to hear from you and know what you think...

Colas is a traditional son jarocho from Veracruz, Mexico introduced to me by the Villa-Lobos Brothers, a trio from Veracruz now living in Nueva York (they're in the above photo). The group also appear on the CD singing and playing the Mexican celebration song El Pijul.

This version of Colas isn’t exactly son jarocho and it’s not exactly rock and roll but everyone at the recording session agreed that the end result sounds like New York in the new century and invites wild dancing.

I know I have some pictures here somewhere...

love,
Dan

P.S. Here's who's making some joyful noises on Colas: Colin Brooks plays the drums. Sonia De Los Santos sings. John Foti is on accordion. Rob Friedman plays the lap steel. Elena Moon Park plays her violin. George Rush stops by to play tuba. Beto Villa-Lobos plays the Jarana guitar. Ernesto Villa-Lobos sings. Luis Villa-Lobos plays the violin. DZ sings and plays the electric guitar.

I know it's not music critique 101 but when the tuba started up I was grinning like a 3 year old! Sounds like another fun song that was fun to record.

Tengo que bailar AHORA! Someone has been doing his Spanish homework. Tremendous fun! My high school Spanish won't help me much with this rapid-fire gem. This is a long way from "Malti" & "Queremos Bailar." "Colas" will certainly inspire dancing, but perhaps less singing/playing along than Dan's other work, at least amongst the gringos. Then again, kids might think it's fun to sing really fast in Spanish. I wonder if I'll hear this song again at the concert on Sunday. I can't wait to hear the whole CD. Thanks for the preview!

I submitted a comment about this song earlier, but it hasn't been posted yet. In any case, I have to revise my first impression. Gringos CAN (and should) sing this song. We included it in last night's dance party and the kids asked for 4 repeats! I thought the rapid-fire words would discourage children who don't speak Spanish, but my 4 year old sings the words she knows and begs me to translate the rest . . . which I'm happy to realize that I can do, even with my meager Spanish education from days of yore. She loves the verse about the forward and backward walking horse. I don't know why, but it cracks her up. I can't make out two of the words sung by Sonia De Los Santos, but my Colombian girlfriend can't either.

So my first post should have been more enthusiastic. This song definitely passes the dance along and sing along tests. As for playing along, well, I'll have to get back to you on that! I don't even know where to start.

This is what happens when you wait to check email for several weeks--I'm so glad to find out that you're now writing a blog. I can't wait for my kids to wake up tomorrow morning so I can play them this song. I know it will inspire some wild dancing in the living room.

Yes it surely does inspire dancing, as my 3.5 yearold right here can attest too.

We were doing a bit of scouring on the web and come to find that you will be in our neck of the woods soon - UCLA. We hopefully will be in the audience.

The song speaks to me of Cuban Miami with grandfathers playing dominos with intimidating flair, kids chasing each other with squirt guns and everyone else trying to stay cool, but letting rhythms put smiles on their faces. Even with the brisk weather outside, your song brings a bright sun with it.

Thank Dan and Musical friends for brightening up our toes and sunday night -

The hardcore four-year-old DZ fan in our house says, "It's great and it's perfect and it's amazing." We're chomping at the bit for this CD, and I don't even mean that in a "our kid needs some new music that doesn't drive us bananas" kind of way. I mean that in a "we're all-around psyched to hear this thing" kind of way. ¡Viva Zanes!
