We’ve been through a lot with so many of you over the years and it’s impossible to describe how much it means to be, in some small way, a part of your family lives.

Regardless of political, social, or spiritual affiliations, we can probably all agree that these are some challenging times we’re living in!

Dan Zanes and Festival Five – A Wild Musical Spring!!

Spring greetings to all friends and neighbors!

I’m so proud of the family music that my label, Festival Five Records has made since 2000 and I count being able to release solo CDs from Father Goose, Sonia de los Santos, and Elena Moon Park among the crowning achievements.

There is so much happening with all of us these days and it’s time to change the nature of this newsletter.

So, for those of you wanting some homespun 21st century all-ages music that begins to reflect the world we live in, here we go as the Dan Zanes Newsletter becomes The Festival Five Newsletter!

On the menu:

+ The Dan Zanes and Friends Lead Belly Project at Celebrate Brooklyn June 11th
+ Parents Choice Gold and a new video from Sonia de los Santos

+ Father Goose’s DJ Mix Tapecast on YouTube

+ LADAMA in Brooklyn May 20th

+ Shows and more shows from all of us…

Brooklyn is our home and Celebrate Brooklyn is our most important summer concert series so of course we’re beyond excited to be bringing The Lead Belly Project to The Bandshell on Saturday, June 11th at 4pm.

This is our house party / barn dance / campfire / approach to the children’s music played by The King of the 12-String Guitar.

I consider Lead Belly to be the Godfather of modern children’s music and he’s certainly been my main man since the very beginning.

Thank you Celebrate Brooklyn for giving us the chance to revel in his songs!

Sonia de los Santos is on fire!

First a Parents Choice Gold Award for her new CD, Mi Viaje, and now a new video.

If you want to read why the people at Parents Choice feel so strongly about her music click here.

And if you want to see the essence of soulful homemade family entertainment it’s right here in her video for the song “Chocolate.”

Father Goose has been a DJ for as long as I’ve known him. His skills are a wonder to behold.

If you want some Goose DJ Mix Tapecasts for your dance parties or car trips he’s cranking them out and they’re great.

(I recommend making a cardboard stand-up of Father Goose to prop up near the stereo… a nice option).

Elena Moon Park been helping to organize a group of four musicians from Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela & Brooklyn who have united to form a band called LADAMA.

Their mission is to promote women’s empowerment by encouraging creative expression among youth across the Americas.

They’ll be performing two different shows this Friday, May 20th at National Sawdust in Brooklyn. The 7pm show includes young dancers from El Puente.

This group is highly recommended. For more information you know what to do: Click here…

We’re wrapping up the Lead Belly record for Smithsonian / Folkways. Chuck D. and Valerie June are among the special guests.

I love it so far and hope you will too…..

Spring turns into summer in the blink of an eye and that means….. Shows!!

Lead Belly, Warm Music, and Me…

Greetings friends, neighbors and assorted music freaks!

Good news!

I just signed a contract with Smithsonian / Folkways to make a cd of Lead Belly’s children’s music.

It’s really a dream come true for me.screen-shot-2016-09-26-at-2-04-37-pm

Lead Belly was my inspiration when I decided
to learn to play guitar at age 8
and he’s been my main man every step of the way in this family music adventure.

AND Folkways was the label that released his most influential recordings.
This is a thrill, to say the least.

The cd will be out this fall and I’ll be playing many Lead Belly shows in the coming year… Stay tuned!!

I don’t know how you’re staying warm this winter but I’m doing it with old school Haitian Music.

Here’s a spotify link to some of my favorite songs to listen to at the end of the day.
I’ll put together a playlist of uptempo tunes for the next time around.
Bon bagay!!

December: An Incredible Month for Music!

Greetings friends, neighbors, and lovers of the holidays,

I’m sure you are fielding a thousand emails a day in the merry month of December.

So I’ll keep it brief….
Here’s the holiday menu:
+ 20% off everything in the Dan Zanes General Store this week
+ A few tickets are left for the 5th Annual Holiday Sing Along at the City Winery
+ People are flipping over the Sonia de los Santos CD
+ Finally, a new t-shirt!
+ Christmas in Concord, DZ Holiday music!
Over here at Festival Five Records we’re feeling the holiday mood in a big way and things are priced to move.
It’s a holiday sale! Everything in the store, including the Sonia de los Santos CD and the new t-shirt, is on sale at 20% off.
Too good to be true you say…. but it is true! For this week only. Here are the links: Merchandise & Music.
I can’t believe we’ve been gathering at the City Winery in NYC to sing our holiday-loving heads off for 4 years now.
And this is year number 5! The show is almost sold out but if you jump on it now you might be able to get some of the last tickets.
As you may already know a songbook is included in the price.
Guests include Ashley Phillips and The Amazing Leo.
Here’s the link.
Mi Viaje, the new family CD from Sonia de los Santos is creating quite a stir out in the world of all-ages music, bilingual and otherwise.
People are responding to the thoughtful song selection, the soulful presentation, and the overall communal sound of children’s music from Sonia’s Mexican perspective.
And the press has been great!! Here’s a clip from NY1.
When this CD came out a few months ago I stepped back and looked at Father Goose’s Bam Bam Diddly, Elena Moon Park’s Rabbit Days and Dumplings, and Sonia’s Mi Viaje and  felt an overwhelming wave of gratitude for the opportunity to work with these major family music artists.
As a collection I think these CDs represent the best in all-ages multicultural music.
Click here for more information.
And lastly, after almost 3 years, we have a new DZ t-shirt! It’s designed by LaToya Duncan and I love it.
So if you want something fresh for the holidays and have absolutely everything else here’s the link.
I almost forgot… Holiday music!
Christmas in Concord is my one and only seasonal recording…

Upcoming Shows:
New York, NY
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6th at 11am
City Winery
Dan Zanes and Friends
The Fifth Annual Holiay Sing-A-Long

December can be quite a 3-ring circus and I appreciate all of the opportunities I have to spend musical times with my family and friends.

I hope that when these moments occur you’re there too!
